Here at the Property Developer Network, we hold regular meetups for our members. At venues in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth we host industry expert guest speakers and learn about real deals our members have taken on, warts and all.

Then we stay on for a drink and a chat afterwards, giving our members the all-important opportunity to network. Networking plays a key role in long-term property development success.

Sounds good right?

But of course we’re all busy. It’s like a national sport these days, competing to see who is the busiest. Giving up a few hours on a weekend can feel like a big sacrifice. You might see a notification about an upcoming meetup and put it in your “maybe” pile. Sure, the topic seems relevant, the speaker sounds interesting and you’d love to spend a bit of time focusing on your financial goals, but you’re just not sure you can spare the time. Maybe you’ll watch the recording back after the event.

But here’s the thing…

Getting face to face with people who are doing the things you’re doing, or the things that you want to be doing, gives you a much better chance to stay focused and motivated. Surrounding yourself with active property developers helps maintain momentum.

You’re probably familiar with Tony Robbins, a bestselling author, global entrepreneur, investor and educator. He’s all about hanging out with people who are doing what you want to do.

Here’s what he had to say in a Netflix documentary:

Model someone who has already achieved the results that you want, someone who is consistently successful, because it means they have a strategy. Figure out how they do it. Success leaves clues. If someone is effective not once, not twice, but consistently in anything, they’re not lucky; they have a strategy. Study it and figure out what it is.”

Our meetups or any gathering that rounds up like-minded folk to chat about property development are a priceless opportunity to not only keep our financial goals front of mind, but to keep kicking the can down the road.

As humans we’re a herd pack. We stick together.

And the herd tries to protect anyone that strays from the herd. This means if you’re only hanging around with people that aren’t doing property development, it’s much harder to get traction to pursue development goals. In fact, sometimes well-meaning family and friends actively discourage us from pursuing our goals, either because they don’t understand the world of property development or they don’t want you to step away from the safe and known environment of the herd.

On the flipside, when you come regularly to meetups, like-minded people say:

“Hey, how’s your project going?”
“Did you overcome that problem you told us about?”
“Have you managed to secure finance?”
“Did you see that subdivision opportunity near you?”

This developer herd is your secret to staying on task and our meetups are a place where you can use herd mentality to your advantage. Community support can accelerate your property development journey.

We want to be surrounding ourselves with people who are lifting us up and inspiring us to do better than we currently are.

We want to hang around with people that are doing what we want to be doing, as opposed to what we’re currently doing, especially if what we’re currently doing is getting us nowhere fast.

If they’re doing what you want to be doing, they lift you up into that space.

If they’re not, they can be like an anchor around your neck, locking you into inaction.

You’ve all heard my story about how I got started: five mates around my kitchen table talking property. You’ve heard how we’ve grown, and the reason for that is because there’s an abundance of opportunity and being scared about somebody stealing my deal doesn’t help. Instead, we all help each other to move forward.

I know that feeling of just starting out, of trying to figure out what you should do and how you should do it and who you should do it with.

Well, the best way to figure this stuff out, to choose your strategy, is to hang out with people who’ve already done it.

Come and ask the people who have not only started on their journey but are two, five and 10 projects deep into development.

I had one guy who’s been coming to our network for more than six years. While he was actively attending he wasn’t actively participating. But over time he has grown his confidence and he started to participate. Then, with a little more confidence, he started to take action. He followed other people’s guidance and used their experience to help him on his own journey.

There’s so much value to get out of networking - the collective is more powerful than the individual. One of the things I love best about our meetups is the chance for some masterminding. Mastermind groups can help you improve your property development decision-making.

You might have heard of Napoleon Hill, the author of Think and Grow Rich. He was a big fan of mastermind groups as a way of taking your personal and professional life to the next level.

Hill’s idea is that when two people get together, a third mind, the “mastermind” was created. To him, it was a separate force in the conversation.

He says “Each mind, through the principle of mind chemistry, stimulates all the other minds in the group” and he describes a mastermind group as “A friendly alliance with one or more persons who will encourage one to follow through with both plan and purpose.”

I’m sure you’re getting the drift – it’s a more intellectual version of “two heads are better than one”!

It’s a well-reported fact that rich folks use the masterminding process to get better outcomes. Hill himself followed American billionaire and steel magnate Andrew Carnegie around for 25 years so he understood the power of proximity.

Need more convincing to come along to our meetups?

Here are just some of the potential benefits….

You can:
-          Exchange ideas
-          Solve problems
-          Meet experienced professionals or those with skill sets you can use
-          Meet people who might join you on your development journey
-          Boost confidence
-          Be inspired
-          Make friends
-          Build a reputation as someone who has integrity

The social element is critical - hanging around after our guest speakers have wrapped up and genuinely getting to know people on a personal level. Don’t just turn up and hand out business cards. Stay for a drink and a chat.

Using shyness as an excuse? Bring a friend!

Don’t have much to say because you’re a newbie? Well, it’s okay to listen more when you start out, that’s how you learn.

If you're just starting out, our free introductory 7-Step Development FORMULA course is another great way to build your knowledge base.
