Internal Structural Renovation + Reconfiguration of Floor Plans (Rob Andary)
Doing a major renovation is CHALLENGING enough – but IMAGINE you are the Architect and Project Manager and the Client is your Sister!!!
Add to that… they grew up in the area and his sister had a DREAM to move back, so she purchased this mid-century modern classic with city views in her favourite part of town.
The Design Brief was to use the existing footprint of the house and transform the connections between spaces both horizontally and vertically to create flow and efficiency.
Sounds simple… right? What could possibly go wrong???
Well, everything from a leak in the basement causing a 30cm flood, the builder taking 6 months to finalise a quote, multiple design changes by the client, blowouts to the programming schedule and to the budget! And managing that sibling/professional relationship… Wowser!
Luckily, the house needed no remedial structural works and Rob’s clever design within the existing footprint avoided DA requirements and the Building Permit was fast-tracked through Council.
His savvy management of the programming, material supplies and working relationship with the trades allowed them to design on the fly creating the best solution for each space in the house. And as a good brother does… Rob got his hands dirty too!!! laying bricks, setting out floors, labouring…
The uniqueness of the site AND the trust and support between the siblings combined to transform the interior of the house into an unrecognisable space!
